Whole Health Changes, Inside and Out! Check Out What's New!!

When I think about health, I think about the inside and out...full, whole health!  This includes what you put into your mouth and feed your body...but also, what you do on the outside to care for yourself and health!

So what does that look like?  You take care of your body by exercising --> then you eat healthy --> so what's next?  What you do with your skin!  If you care about the fitness and nutrition of your health, then it's just as important to care for your SKIN, let's face it...we've all got it, and...like it or not, we are all aging EVERY single day!  ;)

The Best Butt Lifting Program - Master's Hammer and Chisel Review

I've not done an update lately on what I'm doing to keep myself in shape so here it is!!  Back in December, I started doing the new program The Master's Hammer and Chisel.  It quickly became my FAVORITE workout!  I have really fallen in love with lifting weights!  (Major shocker for me...I was always a cardio junkie).

I've now started my 2nd round of Hammer and Chisel and I'm now on week 4 of my second round.  The first round I finished with results that I was proud of, they weren't stellar, but neither was my complete consistency in my nutrition (I  know this makes a HUGE difference in results).  However I will share with you that this program has done THE MOST for reshaping my body and I fully believe that it's because it's more lifting weights than I've done before!

Here's one of my favorite set of moves in one of the workouts!  It's definitely challenging, but so worth the challenge as you see yourself improving and getting better!!



My first round of the 60 day program, I lost about 2.5 lbs and 4 inches.  Now...this is not over the top results.  BUT...the biggest difference is the SHAPE of my body, the way my clothes fit, my BUTT is finally becoming lifted (seriously, that's a pretty sweet thing!), and I'm definitely more confident in my clothes and bathing suit!

So...let me repeat!  This is THE BEST program that I've found that will LIFT YOUR BUTT!!  And no...you don't have to be 20 for this to happen.  I'm 35 years old and have seen such a difference in that area!!  Hands down, my favorite program for toning your backside!

SO...starting the 2nd round of Hammer and Chisel, my goal is to increase my weights and really push myself.  Now, I'll be the first to admit that my consistency in this program has come from my workouts...honestly, my nutrition has NOT been as consistent while on this program (one reason I'm finally doing an update here...to keep me accountable).  Even in the first 3 weeks of my 2nd round I've not been as consistent in following a meal plan for the program!

Like I say to my challengers, IF YOU FAIL TO PLAN, YOU PLAN TO FAIL!  It's so true (from first hand experience for sure!).

It's a NEW week and it's never too late for a refresh!  Today marks the time where I'm committing to the nutrition plan along with my consistency that I've already proven in my workouts.  For whatever reason, I've resisted sticking to a nutrition plan during the workout!  Well...no more!  It's GO TIME!!

One reason I'm doing this program is to really challenge my body...but I have to fully commit to both aspects, nutrition and fitness!  So, what is the best way to do that??  By creating a meal plan and sticking to it this week!!  So here's what I'm doing!



So...I'm committing, right here - right now...to both the nutrition and fitness aspects of the Hammer and Chisel!  I'm excited to see the results!!

Can you believe that summer is less than 8 weeks away???  That means that swimsuit season is RIGHT around the corner!  Are you READY for SUMMER??

Taco Bake


Our family is crazy about Taco Tuesday...honestly we could have some form of tacos every night of the week and be happy! So, I decided to try out something new! I found this recipe from Fitmomangelad.com and decided to give it a try! I made a few adjustments to fit our family! It's a pretty flexible recipe, which I love!

  • 2 cup cooked brown rice
  • 1 yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can diced green chilies
  • 16-20 oz ground turkey (or if you prefer lean ground beef)
  • green or red bell pepper,chopped
  • 1 zucchini, chopped
  • 1-2 tsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 T Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Oregano
  • ½ tsp Thyme
  • 2 tsp cumin (optional)
  • 1/3 cup Cilantro, chopped
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce (low sodium)


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350. Spray a 9X13 baking dish with EVOO, set aside.
  2. Sauté the onion, garlic and peppers medium-high heat for 1 minute.
  3. Add ground turkey and green chilies and allow meat to brown. Cook until meat has no pink.
  4. Add seasonings and lime juice, stir to combine. 
  5. Remove from heat - add rice, tomato sauce, 1/4 cup of cheese to the skillet and stir.
  6. Pour mixture into 9x13 dish. Add remaining cheese.
  7. Cover with foil & bake for 20 minutes.
  8. Remove foil & bake an additional 10 minutes or until cheese is melted/bubbling. Remove from oven & let cool for 5-10 minutes.

1 Red, 1 Green, 1 Yellow, 1 Blue, 1/4 Purple
One serving size equals 1/4 of the dish. Happy Eating! :)
Extras
Substitution alternatives - Ground turkey/ Ground Beef and Brown Rice/Quinoa
*1 cup uncooked brown rice is about equal to 2 cups of cooked rice --
1 yellow container is roughly 1/2 cup. If following the 21 Day Fix, measure out 4 yellows of cooked rice to add to the meat mixture to make sure it's an accurate container count.

Mom Tip: How to Help your Kids Swallow Pills (or Vitamins)

How many of you have struggled with helping your kids learn how to swallow pills or vitamins?  I remember how difficult it was growing up and having to make that switch from "chewable" to "grown-up pills".  Let's face it, it's a necessary skill every kid has to learn (and every parent has to figure out how to teach!).

Just yesterday we were sitting down for a weekend family breakfast.  Our vitamins were out on the table and we had just run out of the kid "chewable" vitamins.  My daughter was getting over being sick, and my hubby and I thought this was the perfect time for our kids to "learn how to swallow pills", (mind you, they are 8, 11, 12...the time is right!).

So, my husband said, "ok kids, we're out of the kids vitamins so it's time you learn".  Moans and groans and complaints started flying out of the kids' mouths.  I could see some giant tears getting ready to form in my youngest's eyes with the thought that he'd have to "swallow" something!

Now, our vitamins aren't "sugar coated" and are fully natural and organic so they don't taste good if they stay in your mouth for longer than it takes to chug some water down!  We warned them of this, so told them it must be quick!

"Ok, here's what you'r going to do...put the vitamin in the back of your mouth on your tongue, then take a huge drink of water and keep drinking." my husband said.

Well, my little guy just froze.  My oldest decided he was going to be the pro and "show up" his siblings, and with one gulp...he was done (and letting us all know about it too!).  My daughter, well, not to be outdone by her brother decided to try.  We reminded her to drink quickly!

In went the vitamin, the water started to go down the hatch...and suddenly, she stopped.  Then came the faces of complete disgust, moved onto the gagging and "fake" throwing up motion (not dramatic in the slightest, lol).  Then all of a sudden, it gets spit out on her empty plate.

Well...that was an epic fail!

So...Plan 2!!

As moms, we always have to be thinking... So, I went to the kitchen, grabbed 9 mini M&M's for them to "practice" on.

My oldest got to eat all 3 because he already succeeded!

My little guy immediately ate one before I could even explain what was going to happen.

My daughter waited and probably wondered how this was going to help her!

"Ok guys, here's what you do...Jeremy, you get to enjoy yours since you already swallowed your vitamin.  Anthony and Katelyn, here's the deal.  You're going to practice with a mini M&M, put it in the back of your mouth and swallow it down.  IF you can swallow that down the first time, then you get to EAT the remaining M&Ms that you have and you don't have to practice anymore!"

Their eyes lit up with excitement at this point!

Anthony: "Well I'll take on that challenge."  M&M in the mouth, water down the hatch...and his finger in his mouth searching for the M&M that he surprisingly couldn't find!!  "I DID IT!!  IT'S GONE!!"  So, we cut up a vitamin into thirds and gave it to Anthony and Katelyn.  Anthony did the same thing as the M&M, and magically it disappeared!!  BOOM...down the hatch!!

"GREAT JOB Anthony!!  You can NOW enjoy your 3rd M&M!!"

"Katelyn, it's your turn!!"

Well, not to be outdone by her younger brother, she knew she needed to do the same, but was very hesitant because of her previous attempt!  Finally, she did it...one M&M down the hatch, followed by the vitamin and BOOM...she gets to enjoy 2 M&Ms!!

So there you have it!  An easy way to help your kiddos learn how to swallow pills and graduate from chewables to grown up pills!!

Spicy Slow Cooker Chicken

I recently bought 2 whole chickens from Costco.  I cleaned the yucky insides out and popped them in the freezer (learned to clean out the insides before freezing them...heed this advice if you choose to freeze whole chickens!!).  So I thawed one over night last night and needed something that was quick, easy and delicious!  CROCK POT!!  It's my "quick and easy" solution to everything!

I went searching for a great recipe and ran across one from Kate O Lynch (original recipe here) and thought it looked amazing!  I had to do some modifications to the original because I was making this last minute and thought I had all the spices...but improvised instead!

Spicy Whole Chicken (Slow Cooker Style!)

2 tsp Salt
2 tsp Paprika
1 tsp Cayenne Pepper (My substitution was red pepper flakes about 1/3 tsp b/c I didn't have cayenne pepper!!)
1 tsp Onion Powder (my substitution was onion flakes...again b/c I didn't have the powder!)
1 tsp Thyme
1 tsp Pepper
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 Whole Roasting Chicken
1 Onion, sliced and broken in pieces

So...like you learned above, this was a "last minute" throw together.  I did not allow the chicken to soak in with the spices overnight, however you could do that to make the flavor deeper!

I cut up the onions and broke them apart to line in the crockpot.  Mixed together all the spices above and patted the chicken, bottom first an then top, covered it completely (and I used it all).  Placed the chicken on top of the onions and set my crock pot on low for 4 hours.  I'm sure you could leave it a bit longer if you'd like but you don't want to dry it out.

After it's cooked, remove from crock pot and let it sit for a few minutes to cool some and allow the juices to soak into the chicken.  Cut up the chicken as you like and it's ready to serve!

You can easily serve this with brown rice or quinoa or potatoes along with some veggies.  OR you could serve this in tortillas and turn it into more of a Mexican meal.  Either way is absolutely delicious!!

Battle of the Bulge - Spring Health and Fitness Accountability

Spring is here and do you know what that means?  SUMMER is right around the corner!  Yep...bathing suits, beaches, pools, shorts, tank tops... All of that!

Well, I know sometimes it's easy to let winter go by and stay cuddled up because it's cold and a good excuse to allow the pounds to pack on!  Not that it's something we set out to do...but it just happens!!

If you're ready to get that winter layer off and feel confident for summer then NOW is your time to do that!  Seriously, it's March...by the time the kids are out of school by June, you'll want to be ready to feel good and be active!  That's a solid 2 months that you have to really be serious about getting back in shape!

21 Day Fix Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Frosting

I made this for a special treat for Valentine's Day for our family!  I didn't know what to expect, but I had heard it was really good!  I started making it and wondered if it was going to turn out ok.  My hubby even turned his nose up to this as I was making it and thought he'd have to go out and get a different dessert for the kids!  However...it did NOT disappoint once we dug into it!!

I will warn you, this is not your typical cake batter that you would expect.  I did have concerns that it would cook up properly as I was going through, so just know there is going to be some separation when you're mixing the honey, butter and eggs...this was normal (at least in my preparation)...however it did turn out just fine!!

I did have to add a considerable amount of time for cooking.  It called for 25-30 minutes and I probably cooked it for closer to 40-45 minutes.  It was still very moist and absolutely delicious!

Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Frosting (Taken from the Fixate Cookbook)
Serves: 12 (one slice each) Prep Time: 20 min.  Cooking Time: 30 Min

  • 1 cup       almond flour
  • 1/2 cup   coconut flour
  • 2 tsp       baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp    sea salt
  • 3/4 cup   unsalted organic grass-fed butter (divided use)
  • 1 cup      raw honey (or maple syrup) divided use
  • 4             large eggs
  • 1/4 cup + 3 tbsp.  unsweetened almond milk, divided use
  • 1 tsp       pure vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup   organic unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
Directions 
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Coat a 9 inch round baking pan with spray.  Set aside.
  3. Combine almond flour, coconut flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl; mix well.  Set aside.
  4. Cream together 1/2 cup butter and 3/4 cup honey in a medium mixing bowl; beat on medium speed for 1 minute.
  5. Add eggs one at a time; beat until blended.
  6. Add 1/4 cup almond milk and extract; beat until blended.
  7. Add almond flour mixture to butter mixture; beat until creamy.  
  8. Pour batter into prepared pan.
  9. Bake 25 to 30 minutes (mine took closer to 40-45 minutes)
  10. Whip remaining 1/4 cup butter in a medium bowl; beat on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes, or until creamy.
  11. Add remaining 3 tbsp almond milk to butter; beat until well blended.
  12. Add cocoa powder; beat until well blended, scraping bowl occasionally.
  13. Slowly add remaining 1/4 cup honey while beating on medium speed.  Set aside.
  14. Once cake is cool, evenly spread frosting; cut into 12 slices.

White Chicken Chili

Soups and chili are some of my favorite meals, fortunately, my family loves them too!

My mom used to make White Chicken Chili all the time growing up but I forgot about it...so I dug out the recipe and decided to spice it up a bit!

I had a whole chicken that I needed to use, and I love the homemade broth that it makes.  So today, I boiled my whole chicken to make the broth to use for my chili (broth and chicken)...Deboned the chicken and strained the broth!!  But...you don't have to use the chicken like this!

Ingredients: 
White Chicken Chili, 21 Day Fix Approved Recipe, www.HealthyFitFocused.com, Julie Little Fitness
4 chicken breast (or whole chicken deboned...you can always add more if desire!)
4-6 cups chicken broth
1 onion chopped
1-2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans Northern white beans
1-2 cans diced green chiles (with juice)
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp dired oregano
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp salt
pepper to taste
juice of 1/2 lime
chopped fresh cilantro (either for garnish or an needed in chili...optional)


Directions
  1. Cook chicken fully.  I like to sauté onions and garlic before adding to chili.  
  2. Add all ingredients together, let simmer for at least 20 min or until hot.  This is also a great crockpot recipe.  Cook this up and let it cook on low for the day!  
  3. Top with fresh cilantro, cheese and avocado!

  • 1 red
  • 1/2 - 1 yellow (depending on amount of beans you eat)
  • 1 blue (if you add cheese and avocado)

Who am I? My Why, Part 1 and Part 2

I'm 35 years old and I've finally discovered who I am!

"WHO AM I" has been a constant question I’ve asked myself over the past 12 years as a mom.  I’ve tried on different hats to see if they fit, but they never do.  Why?  Because they're not MY hats!  We wear many, and that’s ok, but you have to figure which ones fit.

I’ve admired my husband from the first day I met him 16 years ago.  He knew exactly what he was going to do in life.  He was driven, he had purpose, he had a goal in mind. His goal...Law School.  


Throughout college, I didn’t have a clear goal or purpose or career in mind.  Yes, I was driven to be successful, get good grades, do well and learn.  But my major was vague, I didn’t have direction or know WHAT I wanted to do after college.  I didn’t know what career path I wanted to pursue.  


I applied for a number of different jobs in all different areas and career types.  I worked for about a year before having our first son, then part time another year before having our second child.  From there, despite the school loans that were piling up, I began my “career” as a stay at home mom for the next 12 years.  At that time, I found my purpose through being home with my children.  


However, I still longed and had a desire to be successful in a career, outside of being a mom.  I craved to fulfill that deeper sense of purpose I knew I had in life, but wasn’t fully living out.

You are here to do great things!  www.HealthyFitFocused.com Early in our marriage, I had a taste of being an entrepreneur.  I fell in love with the possibility that anyone could be successful, despite their background.  It definitely planted a seed in my mind that “success is possible” even for ME.  However, I made excuses that really came down to a belief in ME, so, I pushed it away and told myself “I’m not as good as them”.  


A few other times I found entrepreneurial ventures that I could do while my kids were at home.  While they were successful, I didn’t have a clear purpose and belief in WHAT I was doing, and ultimately in ME...that I could succeed.  


Fast-forward to August 2013, when I was introduced to Beachbody.  Health and fitness had already begun to gain traction and importance in my life.  I was first introduced to the fitness programs through Beachbody and then soon learned of the coaching and business side of it, which intrigued me.  The entrepreneurial seed had already been planted in my heart and I knew that’s what I loved - be your own boss, work flexible hours, earn an income, all from home!  


I saw this as a great opportunity personally to get healthy and fit, pay it forward and help others do the same, and to grow and earn an income that could really change our lives.  I knew I was a great encourager and motivator and health and fitness was something I was passionate about!


I jumped in as a coach and truly fell in love with the company, their mission, and helping my challengers....but I felt lost at the same time.  My WHY has always been for my family...to give us the freedom from my husband’s long hours, flexibility (in time and finances) to take family vacations, to be able to pay off school loans and credit card debt.  That’s never changed…


But, I hadn’t been completely honest with myself.  My family is Part 1 of my WHY...but I am the Part 2!  It may sound selfish, and that’s ok.  The other part of my WHY is to SUCCEED at something outside of being a mom.  To truly find my deep passion and purpose in life.  To know that I am capable of great success, paying off debt, supporting my family.  I crave the pat on the back that says “well done, you did amazing, you did more than anyone ever thought possible!”  Let’s be honest, as moms, we don’t always get that!

As a student I worked my tail off and got straight A’s.  There was great accomplishment when I received that final grade I earned, there was recognition as I walked across the stage to get my diploma and heard my name called followed by “Cum Laude”.  I’ve not allowed myself to crave that success since I graduated from college.  But the desire is there, it’s waiting to be unleashed and achieved!

• I always have laundry waiting to be folded, dirty dishes in the sink, things that don’t get done.  I get sidetracked by bright shiny objects, I’m a homebody, I love family time, I love books but have never been a strong reader (therefore I don’t enjoy reading...which is something I am changing).  Sometimes my husband is a better “wife/mom” than me...he helps keep the house and kids in line and is definitely my better half!


• I love to snow ski, hike, take family vacations and “escape from reality”.  


• I have struggled to find out who I really am, what I truly want in life and have felt like I’ve been “going through the motions of life” with no clear focus, purpose and direction.  I have struggled with confidence,  belief in myself and poor body image.  I often fear what other think of me, I fear screwing up big time and that I'm not "good enough" (whatever that means).  But...I continue to grow everyday and develop as a person and I strive to push through these struggles and fears and become the best version of me that I possibly can!  I am a constant work in progress!


• My dream is to pay off our school loans, credit card debt, save for our kids’ future education, to be able to have the option to retire my husband (not that he wants to, but to give him that freedom to choose what he wants to do and not be confined to job just to provide for us).  
Beachbody is the avenue in which I KNOW these dreams can come true for our family.
