Healthy TIPS: How to Survive Halloween

Halloween is only 5 days away!  F-I-V-E!  If you're anything like me, you know Halloween comes with temptation after sweet temptation!  I see the candy stacked in the stores and it makes me cringe knowing that my kids are going to be bringing that stuff home soon!  Thinking of the times when I've fallen victim to MY OWN poor choices of thinking "I'm just going to have ONE mini candy bar"...12 "mini" candy bars later.  Can you relate?  The "Candy Hangover"?  The one that keeps you in your yoga pants on November 1st instead of your skinny jeans?  The one that leaves you saying, "ugh, I don't feel too good!"

Well...it can be different this year.  You don't have to feel defeated and like a Halloween candy failure.  Here are some tips for you to take with you to Halloween, armed and ready to conquer this candy fest they call a holiday!!  It all starts NOW, your mindset will dictate your results and outcome of Halloween.  There will be candy leading up to Friday and thereafter as well!  Don't throw this week out just because you're leading up to Halloween.  Focus and change your mindset!  So...what can you do NOW to prepare for Halloween?

Here are some tips to get you thru the week!

1.  DON'T BUY YOUR FAVORITE CANDY!
Healthy TIPS: How to Survive HalloweenI used to always think my parents were "cheap" when buying candy for Halloween.  We always got the mixed bag of stuff I hated!  Which in all reality, my mom knew that if she had the chocolate in the house, she'd eat it!!  So...lesson learned!!  You know your weaknesses, you know what your favorite candies are, so why tempt yourself buy buying what you love the most?  I know I won't be having Reese's, Kit-Kats, or anything dark chocolate in my house to give out!!! It just doesn't measure up!  If you have extra candy in the house, all of which is your favorite kind, what do you think you'll want to do?  Yep, eat it!!  So just don't go there, it's simple!  This year I'm going to opt for the mini bags of pretzels!  Kids get tons of candy so why do they need more?  Problem solved!!!

2.  OUT OF SIGHT OUT OF MIND
There is no reason to keep a candy dish out on your coffee table just because it's that time of the year!  If it's there in front of you, you'll be so much more likely to grab it and chomp down on some candy while you're watching TV.  I don't even open our candy we give away until we are ready to walk out the door or until our first Trick-or-Treater comes to the door!  If you don't see it, you're far less tempted to reach for it!

3.  KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL
If you are really wanting to make sure you stay on track this week, commit to writing everything down that you eat.  There are great apps for this that you can download and add in your phone, or simply just a pen and paper does great!  Make note of every piece of food, candy, beverage you put into your mouth and really hold yourself accountable to what you're eating.  Most likely you'll eat less because so much of it that we do throughout the day is mindless eating anyways...especially when it comes to Halloween night!!  Before you know it you've had 10 pieces!

4.  EXERCISE
Your exercise program doesn't take a "holiday break"!  Remember that!!  If there's any really important time to make sure you don't miss a workout, it's NOW!!  Prepare in advance.  If you know you aren't going to want to workout then start talking it up in your head NOW and make it a non-negotiable.  Get up on Friday morning, get your workout in and start your day off right!  Plan out your meals for the day, your Shakeology, snacks, lunch, and DINNER!!  Don't forget to eat dinner before you go out trick-or-treating!  ***Shakeology is a great option for dinner Friday night as it will give you the sweet you're looking for instead of the chocolate candy bars!!***


5.  FIND HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES

Here are some healthy treats you can try if you've just got to have that sweet tooth fulfilled!

A Soccer Mom Kind of Day!!

I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who have busy Saturdays like we do!  Especially during soccer season (for us!).  I am a soccer mom...and love it!  Yep, with 3 kids playing soccer, our Saturdays are pretty full!  We usually just cross our fingers that they aren't all at the same time!


So my husband is the one who got everyone into soccer...he played soccer himself growing up and has passed the love of it to the kids!  But this week was an exceptionally special weekend!  The city we live in has a tournament for all the AYSO Volunteers to compete in some soccer games themselves, The Glory Days Cup!  It's super fun and the parents playing have such a great time!  So, not only did we have the 3 kids games this week plus my hubby had 2 games on Saturday and 2 more on Sunday!  5 soccer games evenly spaced out throughout the entire day plus 2 the next day...quite a day!!

And...to support my soccer mom spirit...I saw this super cute hat on someone over the weekend and LOVED it...and, yes, I had to get it.  So, here's the link to Blingirl.com for these hats, this gal has the cutest hats (and she just so happens to randomly be from the area where I grew up, that was kinda cool!)

Well our games started at 8:30 am...but I'll say, the best planned days can start off not so great!  Let's just say my day started out with a BANG!  On my way to Anthony's game, I heard a pop and a whistling sound...yep, you guessed it!  A FLAT TIRE!!  Fortunately, Anthony was already at his game and I was coming after.  So what do we do as moms?  Go with the flow and maybe bat my eyes a bit to get my tire changed quickly!!  I was able to get my spare on within 30 minutes of it and off to his game!!

Finally off to the games Anthony's first, Jeremy's then Katelyn's!



So in order to stick to my meal plan (I'm currently on day 7 of the Ultimate Reset), I definitely needed to have my meals planned out and ready for a day of being out!  So I had my lunch box full of meals and snacks for the day!! Tons of water packed and ready to go!  That's the only way to have a successful day at the field!

I packed my lunch, snacks and the supplements that are needed for the Ultimate Reset for that day and actually had a chance to put it on a plate and eat it "properly"!  But I was prepared and that's what's important!

Quinoa Salad - Ultimate Reset Recipe

I know I have another Quinoa Salad in my arsenal of recipes...but this one was blog worthy!  I'm currently on Day 5 of the Ultimate Reset (2nd time around) and had this for lunch today!  Super delicious.  The recipe is for a single serving, but I'll also put the amount for 4 servings!

Quinoa Salad (1 serving listed first, 4 serving salad in parenthesis)

Ultimate Reset, Quinoa Salad, Vegan Meal, Clean Eating Recipe
Ultimate Reset Quinoa Salad

  • 1/2 cup (2 cups) - cooked quinoa
  • 1 Tbsp (1/4 cup.) - Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • Himalayan salt (to taste; optional)
  • Bragg Liquid Aminos (to taste; optional)
  • 1 Tbsp (1/4 cup.) - fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 (2) - tomatos, diced
  • 1/2 (2) - medium cucumber, peeled, diced
  • 2 Tbsp. (1/2 cup) - pitted, chopped kalamata olives
  • 2 Tbsp (1/2 cup) finely chopped fresh parsley (I prefer cilantro to parsley)
  • 1 Tbsp. (1/4 cup) finely chopped fresh mint leaves


Combine quinoa, oil, salt (if desired), Bragg Liquid Amions (if desired), and lemon juice in a medium bowl; mix well.  Add tomato, cucumber, and olives; toss gently to blend.
Gently fold in parsley and mint.
Covered and let marinate in fridge for 2 to 3 hours before serving.

Flourless Blondie Cookies - Delish!!

Well, ever since I made the Dark Chocolate Flourless Brownie Muffins last week, it got me wondering what else could I find to add to my book of healthy desserts!!  Let's face it, the holidays are coming up and we all love to enjoy some sweets during that time, so why not find some healthy recipes that are super yummy and aren't going to bust a belt!!

Success...I found a recipe!  It was exactly what I hoped it would be...a keeper!!  And yes, they are made with chickpeas!!!

Ingredients 
  • 1 can (15 oz) chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup all natural almond butter or peanut butter
  • 1/3 cup pure maple syrup or agave nectar (you can also use honey if you're not vegan)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 cup vegan (or regular) chocolate chips plus 2 tablespoons
  • sea salt, for sprinkling


Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray 8x8 inch pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. In a food processor, add all ingredients except chocolate chips and process until batter is smooth. Fold in 1/3 cup of chocolate chips, I like to use dark chocolate (because they're the best!!).  Note: Batter will be thick and super delicious, so you could actually just eat it on it's own!
  3. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan then sprinkle 2 tablespoons of chocolate chips on top. (The batter may stick to your spatula, so I like to spray my spatula with nonstick cooking spray first.) Bake for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean and edges are a tiny bit brown. The batter may look underdone, but you don't want them to dry out!
  4. Cool pan for 20 minutes on wire rack. Sprinkle with sea salt then cut into squares. Makes 16 blondes.

I had amazing results with the 21 Day Ultimate Reset and felt truly amazing.  My energy level was greater, I felt so good...not bloated or gassy, my headaches stopped, I lost almost 10 lbs, my clothes fit better!!  I don't want to keep this program to myself, I would love for everyone to have an opportunity to FEEL so much better!!

The Reset Experiment is going to be a very specific group of people who are 100% committed to improving their health.  We will NOT be working out during these 21 Days.  It will be a time to focus on resting your body and allowing you body to be "reset" and flushed of toxins during the 21 Days!  You will have support throughout the entire 21 days through a private group.  And trust me...this support is KEY to your success!!

I am looking for 100% commitment.  

I'm not going to sugar coat this...I'll be honest, this is not an easy program to go through.  It takes time to prepare the meals (you can prepare a lot in advance each week to cut down during the evening), and it is tough.  You may not feel good in the beginning as your body is going through changes of getting rid of some of the toxins we hold onto because of the foods we consume!  BUT...let me tell you.  This program is 100% WORTH IT!  All the time and energy you put into this, is totally worth the end results.

Sage Chicken Breast with Roasted Butternut Squash


Well, there's nothing like a great recipe from Trader Joe's...and that's exactly what this is!  Delicious, simple and quick!!

Sage Chicken Breast

Fresh Sage
Chicken Breast
Salt & Pepper
Olive Oil

Place the amount of chicken you require into a baking dish.  Cut 3-5 slits on top of the chicken breast and insert fresh sage.  Drizzle with olive oil and salt and pepper.  Bake in 425 degree oven for 30 minutes.

Roasted Butternut Squash

Butternut squash peeled and chopped into 1-inch square pieces.  Toss with olive oil and salt and pepper.  Drizzle with honey.

Bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes.  
(You can bake the chicken and butternut squash at the same time).

Dark Chocolate Flourless Brownie Muffins

Anything titled "dark chocolate" I'm a fan of!  These are super delicious and surprisingly healthy!!  PLUS, it's 21 Day Fix APPROVED!!


Dark Chocolate Flourless Brownie Muffins, healthy dessert, clean eating dessert
Dark Chocolate Flourless Brownie Muffins
Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes

Yield: 12 servings, 1 cupcake each

Ingredients:
  • 1 (15oz) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 3 Tbsp. coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips


Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  2. Prepare 12 muffin cups by lining with muffin papers or coating with non-stickcooking spray; set aside
  3. Place chickpeas, eggs, maple syrup, cocoa powder, baking soda, coconut oil and extract in blender or food processor, cover.  Blend until smooth.
  4. Divide batter into 12 prepared muffin cups
  5. Top each muffin with about 4 chocolate chips; push into batter.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  7. Cool completely and enjoy!
